Great Salt Lake Ecosystem Program
Research, management and conservation
The Great Salt Lake Ecosystem Program (GSLEP), which is part of the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources, manages the avian and aquatic communities of the Great Salt Lake. The program also manages the commercial harvest of brine shrimp cysts, a multimillion dollar business for which the Great Salt Lake is world renowned.
The work of managing the Great Salt Lake's unique ecosystem includes collecting environmental data from within and around the lake, as well as surveying waterfowl and shorebirds that rely on the lake as a rest stop during migration. The lake serves as a breeding ground to rear their young and is a major food source throughout their stay.
