The following charts show the total pounds of raw biomass harvested in both arms of the Great Salt Lake, as reported by the 21 harvest companies currently operating. Raw biomass includes cysts, empty shells, brine shrimp, algae and other materials. The yield of dry, processed cysts from the raw biomass varies annually.

The data presented here are from an unpublished internal report by the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources and have not been verified for accuracy.

Notice of emergency changes to the 2020–21 Utah brine shrimp harvest season

I, Rory Reynolds, by authority granted in Section 23-14-8 of the Wildlife Resources Code of Utah declare an emergency amendment to the 2020–2021 Utah brine shrimp harvest season. The following has been amended:

Great Salt Lake brine shrimp harvest season dates and locations

EXTEND the brine shrimp harvest season thru February 28, 2021 for the South Arm Beach only, or until Utah Division of Wildlife Resources personnel determine that brine shrimp cyst densities have reached adequate levels to warrant a closure.

According to data collected and analyzed by the Great Salt Lake Ecosystem Program, the brine shrimp population in the Great Salt Lake can experience a severe population crash if spring cyst densities drop below 4 cysts/liter or are approaching 80 cysts/liter. Current densities are near 80 cysts/liter. Continued brine shrimp harvest is needed to prevent a population crash.

This change is effective immediately and will remain in effect thru February 28, 2021.

Accordingly, the first seven-day timeout of this harvest season pursuant to Rule R657-52-12(1)(c). The brine shrimp harvesting season in the South Arm (both lake and beach) was suspended on Thursday, January 11, 2018 at 5:20 p.m. MST (official sunset). All other aspects of the rule remain in effect. Harvest will be permitted on the North Arm of the lake during this closure period (both lake and beach).

During the closure period, we will continue to sample and determine if there are sufficient quantities of cysts to resume harvest. If the season resumes, it will open at noon on Friday, January 19, 2018. The decision will be based upon resource conservation. We will be in contact with the harvesting companies toward the end of the closure period regarding our decision.

Daily harvest reports during the timeout will not be required except for harvest occurring in the salt ponds and on the North Arm. Daily harvest reports will still be required for January 11. Weekly harvest reports will also be required at the normal time.

The brine shrimp harvesting season on the South Arm Lake (lake only) will suspend Friday, December 30, 2016 at 5:09 p.m. MST (official sunset). All other aspects of the rule will remain in effect. Harvest will be permitted on the South Arm Beach as well as the North Arm (both lake and beach) during this closure period.

During the closure period, we will continue to sample and determine if there are sufficient quantities of cysts to resume harvest. If the season resumes, it will open at noon on Saturday, January 7, 2017. The decision will be based upon resource conservation. We will be in contact with the harvesting companies toward the end of the closure period regarding our decision.

Daily harvest reports during the timeout will not be required for the South Arm Lake. However, reports for harvest occurring in the salt ponds, on the South Arm beach, and on the North Arm will be required as normal. Daily harvest reports will still be required for the South Arm Lake for December 30. Weekly harvest reports will also be required at the normal time.
